Pilates is a resistance training, injury prevention and recovery program that focuses primarily on building core strength.

Programs/Activities: Pilates

Since 1993, Flatiron Athletic Club has maintained a state-of-the-art Pilates studio, and is proud to offer this very effective exercise method to its members. Pilates is a resistance training, injury prevention and recovery program that focuses primarily on building core strength. One of the most wonderful aspects of Pilates is that it can be adapted to meet anyone’s needs, from the therapeutic/rehabilitation client to the professional athlete.

BENEFITS OF PILATES
  • Core strength
  • Development of long, lean, flexible muscles
  • Improved posture
  • A evenly conditioned body, ideal for injury prevention and performance enhancement
  • Creation of a mind-body connection through breath, correct alignment, concentration, precision and flow
  • Rehabilitation of injuries and muscle activity pre- and post-surgery; use as a physical therapy tool and for pre- and post-natal fitness

Our Pilates program includes private and group sessions on the Mat and Apparatus equipment (Reformer and Wall units). We have a staff of 9 instructors with strong backgrounds in physical therapy, physiology, dance, Polestar and the Pilates Method. We offer over 30 classes each week and several time slots are available each week for private instruction. A minimum of 5 private sessions with one of our qualified instructors is required before joining the group Apparatus classes. The classes range from Easy Does It (beginner) to Intermediate/Advanced levels and are designed to accommodate any client’s busy schedule. We offer a free Beginning Mat class for all members. Workout diversity comes from the varied styles of our professional instructors and the different levels of the method itself. Our program focus and goals are for clients to learn and gain the benefits of the Pilates Method in a highly accessible and supportive manner.

All Pilates Mat Classes are included in your membership. Pilates Apparatus Classes are available to members at an additional cost.

CLASS DESCRIPTIONS

PILATES APPARATUS—Develop core control, strength, flexibility, balance and coordination using the teachings of Joseph Pilates and reformer machines. Four (4) private lessons are required prior to signing up for Apparatus classes.

PILATES EASY DOES IT—Similar to apparatus but with gentler technique and emphasis on alignment, good for individuals with injuries or special concerns.

PILATES MAT—Lengthen and strengthen your body using your core muscle groups in a series of non-impact exercises designed to focus on the abs, back and buttocks.

APPARATUS CLASSES
The FAC Pilates Studio has seven reformers and seven wall units; therefore, class size is limited to seven participants. Classes are held seven days per week with one of our highly trained instructors. Classes range from the therapeutic/ rehab level to beginner, intermediate and advanced levels.

MAT CLASSES
Private sessions are not required to attend mat classes. If you do not have Pilates mat experience, we recommend starting with our beginning mat class, which meets on Saturdays at 10:30am. Mat classes are free for members; non-members can attend once they have purchased a guest pass to the club.

THERAPEUTIC PILATES
Therapeutic Pilates is a specialized class focusing on the rehabilitation of injuries, chronic conditions or upcoming or post surgery.
