Flatiron Athletic Club Monthly News
February Special Events
Wow! Already one month down in 2012-it's always amazing how quickly the time seems to go. Judging by how busy we have been here at the Club lately, we know that our dedicated members are well on their way to fulfilling all of those New Year's fitness resolutions and we are very happy to help facilitate all of those goals. We have some great Special Events coming up in February that you will not want to miss out on:
This month, the Boulder International Film Festival will premier a movie about the soldiers that went up Mount Everest with legendary climber and FAC trainer Chris Morris. On Tuesday, February 7th, one of the soldiers, Chad Butrick will give a lecture about the film as well as the experience of the climb. This will be a very interesting and inspiring presentation that you will not want to miss; be sure to join us in the lobby!
If you haven't yet tried Zumba, you are missing out on one of the hottest trends in fitness right now, and we have the absolute best instructors here at FAC! On Tuesday, February 7th, FAC instructor Victoria will be hosting a Zumba workshop at 8:30 in the Yoga Studio. This is a fantastic way to introduce yourself to a super fun new fitness routine and get a great workout at the same time. Feel free to bring your non-member friends as well for no charge!
The FAC Senior Fit Club is gearing up for the New Year. In early February Senior Fit Club meetings will review two new programs, Frasier Meadows Retirement Community programs and a weekly outdoor biking program. Frasier Meadows programs will be available to all 55+ FAC members at no extra charge and will begin February 13th. The new outdoor bike program will start in mid-April.
In addition, Functional Strength Training, BolderBOULDER training, Swim Stroke Training, as well as other programs recommended for seniors will be reviewed. Functional training will have two programs for those who have not participated before and two for those who previously participated. BolderBoulder training will have a 5K in mid-April and Swim 101 and 102 will be taught by Verne Scott.

For those of you who don't know Brigitte Remington, a long-time instructor and part of the FAC family, the story of her daughter is truly amazing. Their daughter Samantha has undergone two heart transplants in less than 18 years; her story is both heart-warming and inspirational. After realizing the enormous financial hardships of dealing with issues like hers, Samantha and her family created an incredible foundation called the Samantha Remington Angel Heart Foundation. During the month of February, Facilitated Wellness has generously offered to contribute 25% of all Valentine's Day gift certificates to this foundation. What better way to treat yourself or loved one to a massage, and contribute to an incredible cause as well? The donated portion of the gift certificates is tax deductible, and you will receive a receipt when you purchase a gift certificate.
Class Updates
Make sure to take note of these changes and updates to our robust class schedule during the month of February:
Swimming: Simon Lessing will be taking over the Monday and Wednesday swim training class at 6:00pm. The class will remain 60 minutes and similar in structure. Due to issues with instructor availability, the Friday evening class will be postponed until further notice. We are however adding two new classes to the schedule; Wolfgang will be leading a 75 minute workout on Tuesdays at 9:00am, and Simon will instruct the same class on Thursdays at 9:00am. This has been a heavily requested class time, and we are happy to announce that we were able to coordinate schedules and offer them beginning in February.
Indoor Cycling:After many years of dedication and hard work, FAC Cycling Director Stephanie Wilner will be stepping down as an instructor and Director beginning in February. We would like to extend a very genuine thank you to Stephanie for all of her hard work here at the Club and wish her the very best with her future endeavors; rest assured, Stephanie will remain as a Club member so we will all have the chance to see her around! New FAC instructor Jessica R. will be taking over the Monday morning 6:00am spinning class, as well as leading the Monday and Wednesday evening 5:30 classes so be sure to sign up in advance and come check these high energy, fun classes out!
Group Fitness: This month, Jillian will be taking over the Tuesday 8:00am Cardio Sculpting class, and Jessica R. will be leading the Monday 12:00pm Ski Conditioning. We are also very excited to announce that back by popular demand is the FAC Fitness Challenge! Note from the Owners
February ‘Get over the Hump’ Month
The cold winter months are still with us, and the sunny springtime days are not quite here yet. The New Year’s goals and fitness regimen is in full swing. Now, let’s maintain that vision of a new you, and keep working on your fitness goals! Here are a few ideas to help you stay on track.
1) A short workout, 20-30 minutes, is much better than skipping it altogether. If you know that your day is going to be tight; make it short, fit it in at home, or walk during your lunch.
2) Try something new! If you’re stuck in a rut, bored with your routine, or not making progress, try something new; a new class-something you don’t normally do, hire a trainer to change up your workout, take a swim lesson. Get a massage regularly to improve workouts, and go to our new dodgeball class. Something new will add some fun to your routine.
3) Nutrition is as important as your workouts! We still are what we eat. Pay attention to what you’re eating, read the label, cut back on the morning pastries, and eat smaller meals. If you need to have that cookie, dessert, or chocolate; share it. Have a few bites of that cookie and throw away the rest, you’ll be better off for it.
4) If you travel, bring some bands, workout gear and shoes, a swimming suit or whatever else it takes to make it happen. You can do 20 minutes of exercise in your room, use the stairs and not the elevator, or walk instead of taking a taxi. There are plenty of simple ways to get a little in!
5) Buy a dog! Not only will you have a life long friend but you’ll be healthier for it. Those walks you take will keep you body healthier and your mind clearer.
6) Enter a race! Whether you’re a triathlete, runner, or walker, there’s something for everyone here. Signing up for an event puts that date on the calendar and helps keep you working out and on track. Make it a short race, long race, or anything in between, just make it happen!
Just remember, maintain that consistency! It will pay off it the long run. The workouts you do when you don’t feel good are the workouts that put you over the top! Keep up the good work!
Yours in Health,
Jens and Keith |
