About: History
Flatiron Athletic Club was originally founded in the fall of 1982. Cal Nickal remodeled an old ice skating rink into a one-of-a-kind athletic club. It started out predominately as an indoor racquet sports club. The club featured 12 courts for handball and racquetball, viewing areas for tournaments, some cardio and circuit training equipment and an indoor pool. In 1989 three tennis courts, an outdoor volleyball pit and outdoor pools were added.
Over the years, some of the courts have been transformed into a spacious, user friendly weight room, a Pilates studio, an Indoor Cycling studio, a large and open Yoga studio and a Stretching area. However, Flatiron Athletic Club has also retained its racquet club identity, offering four racquetball/handball courts, and three squash courts, providing the space for a strong following of each sport.
In the fall of 2001, Cal sold the club to the current partners, headed by Managing Partners Jens Husted and Keith McQuillen (both of whom are Boulder locals). Jens and Keith are hands-on, full time members of the staff at the Club, and are active in many sports and programs at the club. Both use the club’s amenities and features every day, interacting with members.
The Club prides itself on having several long-term employees that have become friends and acquaintances of Club members. The employees are an essential part of making the Club what it is. Feel free to stop and discuss any issues—good and bad—with any of us.
